Instructor Bios for 2008 Retreat

Jeannine Bakriges is a fiber artist and instructor specializing in hand spinning, natural dyeing  and knitting.  She teaches throughout the United States and Canada and writes regularly for Spin-Off  magazine.  Her work can be seen in several Interweave Press books.  She is currently writing a fiber arts book for Schoolhouse Press.  The expected release date is for early 2009.  Originally from Michigan, Jeannine now resides in Whitingham, VT with her husband.
 
Lily Chin has been involved in some aspect of the fashion industry since age 13.  A New York City resident, she is well known as the fastest crocheter in the world.  Lily also has several books, writes a column for Knitter’s Magazine and has countless designs to her credit.  She teaches through North America and has had numerous television appearances.  Currently she is also producing a line of yarn under her own label, the Lily Chin Signature Collection. 
 
Nelda Davis became hooked on spinning twenty-nine years ago with the purchase of a hand spindle, a pair of hand cards and a 6 pound (rather burr-y) Suffolk fleece. Her fiber addiction became more serious with the acquisition of her first wheel 1½ years later. She received a OHS SPINNING CERTIFICATE from the Ontario Handweavers and Spinners Spinning Certification Programme in 1991. Nelda was instrumental in establishing the New Jersey Historic Spinning Wheel Registry and in 1966 became co-curator of the Antique Wheels of NJ Exhibit at the New Jersey Museum of Agriculture. She enjoys teaching spinning at conferences, craft schools, museums and guilds. Nelda is now a resident of Mt. Tabor, NJ.
 
Daryl Lancaster’s  adventure with the fiber arts has been a journey of more than 40 years.  From hand-woven,  pieced garments to custom wearable art and magnificent trims for her woven designs, she shares a wealth of knowledge and experience in the numerous workshops, lectures and seminars she presents at guilds, conferences and craft centers throughout the United States.  The Contributing Features Editor of Handwoven Magazine, Daryl resides in Lincoln Park, NJ with her family.
 
Judith McKenzie McCuin, world renowned fiber artist, teaches throughout the United States and Canada.  Her expertise ranges from the breeding of fiber animals through every related aspect , including but not limited to fiber preparation, dyeing, spinning and weaving.  She is a frequent contributor to Interweave Knits, Spin-Off, Handwoven and PieceWork and has authored  several books.  Due to her textile knowledge and expertise, Judith was called upon to repair a carpet for the king of Afghanistan.    Judith and her husband live in Augusta, Montana where they run a yarn and dye company.
 
Sandy Terp has been knitting for well over twenty years.  A master Lace Knitter, she has authored several books.   Knitting for as long as she can remember, in the 1980's Sandy became intrigued with lace and how it was formed.  This led her to developing what she calls “Lace Shorthand”.  She teaches on a national level and shares her passion with her students.  Sandy lives in Hatfield, PA
 
Rita Schwab is a fiber artist who has been practicing her crafts of weaving and dyeing for nearly 25 years.  She specializes in natural dyeing using ancient recipes with combination dyes and mordants extracted from plants.  The dyeing process becomes totally organic.  Rita has studied with Native Cherokee Indians and derived her knowledge through historical literature and ancient dye resources.  Rita lives in MT. Tremper, NY which is in the Catskill region.
